We were greeted in Guilin by some of my family. Technically we are related through my aunt-in-law, but in Chinese culture, everyone is family and specifically called aunt or uncle. My “uncle” helped us negotiate our hotel and we got a significantly cheaper rate, better than I could ever do. There is no doubt about special rates for only locals at hotels in China.

My parents are originally from the south of China and they left shortly after I was born. This is their first trip back since they immigrated to the United States so it’s been over 25 years! We flew from Shanghai to Guangzhou and while in the cab ride to the hotel, my parents were astonished how much the city has changed.

Huangshan is like nothing I have seen before. The exaggerated peaks all around you seem surreal. I think its beauty and uniqueness makes this a must-see destination in China. If you ever do make it out here, do what we did not and check the weather.

Shanghai: World Expo Highlights

When we heard there was about 500 million visitors each day at the Shanghai World Expo and that China spent about $50 billion dollars on it (more than the 2008 Olympics), we were wound up about going to our first World Expo.
